📕In 2008, I shared a book on my Facebook wall; it’s called “Who Moved My Cheese?” published in 1998 and written by Spencer Johnson. It appeared again on my Facebook memories and it reminded me of how much I liked it. It sounds like a cookbook, but it’s not! It’s an inspiring book about #change management.
At the time I made that post, I was “living” in 2 cities, struggling between entrepreneurial and corporate life. It was also a time when a lot of unexpected changes happened in my personal life. I can still recall the feeling of uncertainty and fear.
I tried reading some of the best-selling self-help books and motivational books, and this one caught my eye. I think the philosophies in this book are still relevant and even have a greater impact, especially in this challenging #VUCA era.
This book is a light-hearted and easy read that uses simple metaphorical characters. There are 2 mice, Sniff and Scurry, and 2 little humans, Hem and Haw, who are set to look for cheese. Initially, they did not have any cheese and after journeying through corridors, they found a station full of cheese. The 2 little humans built a home near the cheese and established a routine to eat the cheese. The 2 mice noticed that the cheese was slowly starting to diminish so they set off to look for new cheese. One day, there was no longer any cheese left in the station, so the 2 little humans got very depressed. Haw encouraged Hem to leave the station to look for new cheese but he declined. Haw left Hem even though he was very fearful of the unknown maze and to his surprise, he found more cheese!
🧀Cheese represents happiness and success. There are a lot of lessons that can be learned from this book– accept that change happens, anticipate the changes, monitor your “cheese”, and adapt to the changes, but the key lesson here is that we need to recognize change, accept it, and ENJOY it!
The unknown can be scary but we can change our mindset. According to the book, “When you move beyond your fear, you feel free.”
😉So enjoy change!
How do you enjoy the taste of new cheese?
